Message from theProvincial Superior
Welcome to theWinter Editionof SocietyMatters.
Aswe leavebehind theEaster Season and soon, thegreat feast of Pentecost, andenter
Ordinary Timeoncemore, I havebeen thinkingof the significanceof ‘Ordinary Time’ inour
lives.
On the surfaceof things,Ordinary Time can seem abit dull or commonplace in a liturgical
sense, comparedwith themore ‘exciting’ seasons of theChurch year, such asChristmas, Lent
or Easter. But to the contrary,Ordinary Time is that period through the year whenwe immerse
ourselves in the life and teachings of JesusChrist in adeeper, slower, more sustainedway. In
gardening terms, it is the time for fertilisation, watering andgrowth.
This concept ofOrdinary Time can alsobe translated toour daily lives. Howoftendowe step
back fromour busyness and really attend to theOrdinarymoments thatmakeupour lives,
our relationships, our jobs? Just like the liturgicalmeaningofOrdinary Time, these arenot
moments tobe skimmedover or entered into reluctantly. It is in thepeoplewemeet, the tasks
weperform, the relationshipswenurture, that wemeet Christ and that we shareHis love. To
liveChrist’smission is to stayopen tohis presence in all themoments ofOrdinary Time that
makeupour daily lives.
In this editionof SocietyMatters youwill read about thewonderful workbeingdone inYendi,
