Society Matters | Volume 28 No. 2 | Winter 2018

Volume 28 No. 2 | Winter 2018 2 Message from the Provincial Superior Dear Friends, One of the biggest events in the life of the SVD AUS Province since our last edition of Society Matters was the Provincial Assembly and Chapter, held in February. With our missionaries scattered across Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and now Myanmar, it is crucial to get everyone together at the Assembly and Chapter, held every three years, to share in prayer and fellowship, to look at where we are as a Province and where the Spirit might be calling us forward. You can read an account of the Assembly and Chapter on page 3 of this edition, as well as an interview on page 8 with Fr Jozef Maciolek SVD, the PNG Provincial, who joined us for the gathering. From my perspective, it was a delight for us to be joined during the Assembly by many of our lay partners in mission, from various SVD parishes and other ministries around the Province. This highlights the growing relationship between the SVD and our lay friends and it is something we value a great deal. Now, our missionaries have headed back to their ministries, hopefully renewed and reinvigorated by this opportunity to spend time together and focus on how we are being called to be missionaries in this fast-changing modern world. We thank you for your ongoing support for our missionary endeavours. Finally, may I leave you with a word of inspiration from Pope Francis in his recently released Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and Be Glad) which encourages us forward to live Christ’s mission of love: “We are frequently tempted to think that holiness is only for those who can withdraw from ordinary affairs to spend much time in prayer. That is not the case. We are all called to be holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do, wherever we find ourselves.” May God bless us as we, together, seek ever new ways of living our lives with love, for after all, this is the foundation of mission. Yours in the Word, Fr Henry Adler SVD Provincial Superior Cover Story: The fruits of the harvest.
